Every May, the Skellig Coast becomes a playground for dreamers, creators, and lifelong sci-fi fans. The May the 4th Sci-Fi Film Festival is more than a celebration of cinema. It is an experience that blends storytelling, community, and the magic of Portmagee with the legacy of Star Wars filmed on the shores nearby.
This year’s festival promises three packed days of screenings, events, and hands on adventures for fans of all ages. The fun begins on Friday evening when Comic-Con swings open its doors at the Portmagee Domes. Stalls from Heroes and Villains, Bronze Art Ireland, Skellig Skies, and Mari Rolan create a treasure trove of comics, toys, and collectibles. Interactive displays and gaming zones are ready to keep fans entertained all weekend.
The festival officially begins with the Opening Ceremony and the premiere of a 360 Star Wars video experience. Inside a special cinema dome, audiences will find themselves floating in the middle of a space battle. It is an unforgettable way to kick off the celebrations as the festival directors share what is ahead for the weekend.
Film lovers can settle in for the Festival Premiere and Q and A. A specially selected sci-fi film opens the programme, followed by a chance to meet the filmmakers and get an inside look at the creative world of independent sci-fi cinema.
Then the village comes alive with lightsabres and costumes. The Lightsabre Battle and Star Wars Parade invites everyone to cheer on a choreographed duel before the characters march through Portmagee. Stormtroopers and heroes of the galaxy offer photos and plenty of excitement for families and superfans alike.
Saturday and Sunday carry the momentum forward with a full film schedule, colouring stations, LEGO corners, VR displays, Battlefront tournaments, and lively discussions with 501st Garrison experts. With multiple feature films, short films, and Q and A sessions throughout the weekend, there is always something new to discover.
From sunrise to stargazing, the May the 4th Sci-Fi Film Festival blends fan culture with breathtaking scenery and warm community spirit. Whether you come for the films, the characters, the technology, or the cosplaying energy, the Skellig Coast welcomes you into a world where imagination takes centre stage.
